The Soeharto issue and the Porn Laws – Dark clouds above Indonesia

One could recite a litany on the problems facing the Indonesia: unsolved corruption cases, new corruption, regional anarchy, legal uncertainty, poor public health, nonexistent education system, gender issues, environmental abuse, religious violence, ethnic violence, rich-poor gap, high fuel prices, high electrical prices, traffic congestion, add your faves. They are the ‘real’ issues. They are the operational issues – things a lot people can deal with, if only they would.

But the Soeharto and the APP (Anti-Porn Bill) issues, which seemed at first to be distractions from the main problems, are actually the real problems. They are by definition the fundamental problems because without some motion in solving the problem, no political will exists to mobilize people for the operational issues. Let us take a look at them separately:
